Welcome to Shingwauk Kinoomaage Gamig

Shingwauk Kinoomaage Gamig – SKG Teaching Lodge is an Anishinaabe post-secondary institute that preserves the integrity of Anishinaabe knowledge and understanding. SKG strives to educate the present and future generations in a positive, cooperative and respectful environment. SKG aims at providing and developing academic programs, workshops and seminars which reflect the Anishinaabe worldview, distinguished by Anishinaabe ways of learning and knowing. Founded based on a vision of the Ojibwe Chief Shingwaukonse’ibun, to create a Teaching Wigwam with an overall goal of providing cross cultural education in Anishinaabe studies. SKG is one of nine Indigenous institutes of higher learning that are legally recognized and home to the National Chief’s Library. Shingwauk Kinoomaage Gamig is a teaching and research centre of excellence in Anishinaabe education.

Anishinaabe Studies

The nomenclature of the Bachelor of Arts in Anishinaabe Studies is intended to distinguish this program from other programs in Ontario that have a similar focus (i.e., Native, Aboriginal, and Indigenous Studies programs). The term Anishinaabe refers to “the Original Peoples of this part of the world,” meaning the peoples of Turtle Island or North America.

Anishinaabemowin Studies

Many universities offer programs in modern languages, ranging from English, French, Spanish, and Italian, to Chinese, Russian, and Japanese. Very few universities, however, offer studies in Anishinaabemowin, or one of the languages of the “First” or “Original Peoples” who inhabited much of Canada. Shingwauk Kinoomaage Gamig offers the only undergraduate degree in Anishinaabemowin in Canada.
