A Recognized Indigenous Post-secondary Educational Institute
Shingwauk Kinoomaage Gamig – SKG Teaching Lodge is an Anishinaabe post-secondary institute that preserves the integrity of Anishinaabe knowledge and understanding. SKG strives to educate the present and future generations in a positive, cooperative and respectful environment. SKG aims at providing and developing academic programs, workshops and seminars which reflect the Anishinaabe worldview, distinguished by Anishinaabe ways of learning and knowing. Founded based on a vision of the Ojibwe Chief Shingwaukonse’ibun, to create a Teaching Wigwam with an overall goal of providing cross cultural education in Anishinaabe studies. SKG is one of nine Indigenous institutes of higher learning that are legally recognized and home to the National Chief’s Library. Shingwauk Kinoomaage Gamig is a teaching and research centre of excellence in Anishinaabe education.
The Creation of the Shingwauk Covenant
Over the past number of years, the need for an Anishinaabe post-secondary institution has become increasingly apparent (Royal Commission Report on Aboriginal Peoples, 1996). In May 2006, the SET and Algoma University signed a covenant that entered a statement of common understanding and commitment to establishing Shingwauk Kinoomaage Gamig, an independent and degree-granting post secondary institution. The Shingwauk Covenant states that Anishinaabe, Canadian and International staff and students must learn to respect and understand each other’s knowledge and cultural differences.
“Our vision in creating Shingwauk Kinoomaage Gamig (Teaching Lodge) will preserve the integrity of Anishinaabe knowledge and understanding in cooperation with society to educate the present and future generations in a positive, cooperative and respectful environment.”
Keys to Success
Community consultation and strong partnerships are the foundation that shapes our programs to meet the unique educational needs of our students. To sustain and strengthen our growth, we will continue to focus on promotion, recruitment and provide educational excellence to our students, and in saying this we ask for your support in partnership and sponsorship.
Shingwauk Kinoomaage Gamig provides leadership and concrete skills to build strong communities globally. We will continue to build on our resources by lobbying federal and provincial governments for financial support, and we will build partnerships based on mutual respect for culturally relevant education.
Shingwauk Kinoomaage Gamig will make History
The SKG Board and staff, in partnership with Shingwauk Education Trust, have immensely enjoyed being part of the creation and growth of a strong educational presence for all people. In December 2017, Shingwauk Kinoomaage Gamig was one of nine Indigenous institutes of higher learning legally recognized when the Indigenous Institutes Act was passed by the Ontario Legislature.
Shingwauk Kinoomaage Gamig is committed to meeting the needs of students and to building capacity through educational excellence, innovative delivery and a deep commitment to student success.
We invite you to be part of our innovative, engaging and respectful Anishinaabek Worldview as we fulfill the vision of Chief Shingwaukonse. We look forward to a new beginning that will strengthen our educational environment which will challenge and support all students; a new beginning that will build on strong leadership and individual autonomy, and improve the quality of life through respectful discussions and education.
