Film Production Certificate Program

Shingwauk Kinoomaage Gamig, in partnership with Weengushk Film Institute, is proud to offer the Certificate in Short Film Production—an eight-month, immersive program.
Delivered on the SKG campus in Bawaating (Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario), this program marks a significant collaboration between two Indigenous-led institutions committed to advancing education rooted in culture and community.
The program is designed to equip students with the technical skills and cultural grounding needed to tell impactful stories through film. Participants will gain hands-on experience in all aspects of filmmaking, including concept development, screenwriting, directing, cinematography, editing, and post-production. Beyond the technical, students will explore Indigenous narrative sovereignty, visual storytelling, and land-based learning practices that honour Anishinaabe perspectives.
This program follows the Lab 1 curriculum developed by the Weengushk Film Institute and is tailored for both emerging Indigenous and non-Indigenous filmmakers. Instruction is led by industry professionals and includes mentorship, practical studio work, and opportunities to create original short films. Students will also explore storytelling as a powerful tool for cultural preservation and creative expression.
Upon successful completion, graduates will receive a Certificate in Film Production accredited by Brock University, along with five university credits—a full year’s worth of academic recognition. This accreditation adds meaningful value to the certificate and opens the door to further academic pursuits or career pathways in the media arts industry.
