About the program

The Practical Nursing Program at Shingwauk Kinoomaage Gamig is delivered in partnership with Canadore College and prepares learners for a rewarding career in nursing through hands-on, learner-centred education in a culturally grounded environment.

This full-time, in-person program emphasizes clinical skills development, community accountability, and culturally safe practice, while providing strong academic and personal supports for learners. Students benefit from small class sizes, simulation-based learning, and meaningful instructor engagement in a supportive learning environment.

Credential

Ontario College Diploma

Students also complete WHMIS and CPR certification while in the program. Upon graduation, students are able to write the registration exam through the College of Nurses where, upon successful completion, they will receive Registered Practical Nurse accreditation.

The Canadore Practical Nursing program is currently approved (Category 1, the highest ranking) by the College of Nurses of Ontario. Upon graduation from this program students can apply to the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) to write the provincial registration examination for practical nurses. Details related to these requirements can be found on the CNO website.

Placement

Students will participate in mandatory placement where they will have the opportunity to integrate classroom, lab, and simulation learning into real world contexts. Students are responsible for costs associated with transportation to and from assigned placements, which may require travel to adjacent or nearby communities in the region.

Learning Outcomes

Learning outcomes represent culminating demonstrations of learning and achievement. In addition, learning outcomes are interrelated and cannot be viewed in isolation of one another. As such, they should be viewed as a comprehensive whole. They describe performances that demonstrate that significant integrated learning by graduates of the program has been achieved.

Opting Out of the eText and eResource Program

Participation in the eText and eResource bundle is mandatory as it is decided at the program level.

Upon entry to the program students will have the option of accepting the full package or to opt out of the non-evaluative resources of the package. If you choose to opt out, you will be required to meet with the Program Coordinator to discuss the TSP and sign a declaration prior to 4:00 pm on the first Friday of the first semester of the program/year. After this deadline, access for the entirety of the program is final and non-refundable. Full deployment of the resources will begin shortly after the opt-out window closes.

Bring Your Own Device (BYOD)

BYOD prepares students to be anytime, anywhere learners using their devices to enhance their learning experience in and out of the classroom, obtain and work with course materials, participate in collaborative environments and become skilled, confident users of the technologies. Knowledge of how to search for and interpret evolving information prepares students to become lifelong learners.

Students are welcome to apply for OSAP (Ontario Student Assistance Program). If eligible, students may receive financial aid to assist with book, material and technology costs. Additionally, first year students can apply for entrance awards , and once enrolled students are eligible to apply for scholarships and bursaries.

Students will typically be responsible for:

  • The cost of their laptop computer, software and other component parts as identified;
  • Ensuring they have the laptop, and proper software installed before classes begin (including the ability to install the desktop version of Office 365)
  • The cost of repairs to their laptop and all maintenance to ensure cybersecurity standards are met; and
  • Adhering to the Computing and Network Resources Acceptable Use Policy
  • Stable and consistent Internet service
  • Latest version of an Internet browser (e.g.: Chrome, Firefox, or Microsoft Edge)
